Egypt - The world is watching

These stunning scenes of thousands of Egyptians braving police forces on Qasr al-Nil Bridge (which connects Cairo’s Tahrir Square with Gezirah’s Opera Square) are from January 28.

George Galloway: My future does not lie over the Irish Sea

DANNY MORRISON, the former Sinn Fein publicity officer, is now a successful author and playwright. He's put me centre-stage in a political drama set in West Belfast, where a Westminster by-election will follow if Gerry Adams is elected south of the border in the forthcoming elections in the Irish republic.

Morrison argues in the Andersonstown News that I should run as an independent in the contest with Sinn Fein support, neatly solving the conundrum that, although elected as MPs, Sinn Feiners are duty bound not to participate in the British parliament.

George Galloway on Question Time

George Galloway is appearing on the BBC's Question Time tonight and is set to clash head-on with another of the guests, Tony Blair's former spin doctor Alastair Campbell.

The programme, on BBC1 at 10.35pm, comes on the eve of Blair's second appearance before the Chilcot inquiry into the Iraq war. It will pit against each other one person whose deceit helped paved the way for war and one whose grave warnings about its consequences have been sadly vindicated. Not to be missed.

Why I'm standing for Holyrood

YESTERDAY, in central Glasgow, I officially launched my campaign to be elected to the Scottish parliament in May. It felt good to be back home. I never wanted to leave Glasgow. Mr Blair expelled me from the party and the Boundary Commission abolished my constituency, merging it with my friend Mohammed Sarwar's.

As I'd helped Sarwar become first a councillor and then Britain's first Muslim MP and then stood virtually alone in defending him when he got into trouble, I was never going to stand against my friend and he knew that.

Blood is thicker than water. That's why during his recent High Court trial for perjury, I sent an emissary to Tommy Sheridan to assure him that should he be acquitted and want to stand for the Holyrood elections in Glasgow, I would not stand against him.

Tunisia must complete fight for freedom

I PREDICTED at the beginning of the unrest in Tunisia that it would end with the fall of the tyrant Ben Ali. An ex-motorcycle cop "adopted" by the CIA, Ben Ali overthrew his patron Habib Bourguiba, who had led the independence struggle against France.

At the relatively modest cost - for a revolution - of fewer than 100 dead demonstrators, a dictatorship who depended on looking all-powerful has been shown to be virtually toothless and the tyrant and his kleptocrat family have scurried away, like Idi Amin before them, to exile in Saudi Arabia.

But as the French revolutionary St Juste said those who "half-make a revolution are digging their own graves". In Tunisia, the dictator has fled but the dictatorship still stands.

Ben Ali's protege prime minister is interim president, the secret police have reloaded with live rounds, a state of emergency has been declared and the elite will try to stay in power. Tunisia deserves better than this. And can have it.

The Tunisian revolution will not be over until real freedom and dignity reigns. Meanwhile, you can be sure the corrupt kings and puppet presidents who rule the Arab world almost without exception will check they've an overnight bag always packed and a jet on the tarmac.
